Beatrice

Beatrice had one job, to breed. Her babies were valuable, but her life and health seemed to not matter. We found Beatrice at a kill lot. She was tagged for destruction. Beatrice was pregnant.

Once at Haven Mountain Beatrice was able to catch her breath. We gave her a double stall and plenty of straw so she could nest for the baby in her womb. As the days passed she realized that we didn’t want anything from her. She was fed, and watered, and sung to, and every day she got a little better, and a little bigger.

The ferrier got to work on her hooves which were in critical condition. And the vet gave us a sonogram and an estimate of when she’ll go into labor. Without knowing what the father was there could be no sure way to say when, let alone what was coming.

Beatrice settled in, and found her routine. Like most donkeys, she’ll not be made to do anything, but can be convinced that it’s a good idea. Even a bath. And then on the 21st of July, 2024 we woke up to the most perfect surprise.

Beatrice is amazingly aware, and extremely smart. For an animal that has suffered such abuse and neglect, she can still find it in her to trust people. She knows how to tell us what she needs, even if it’s more baby carrots. And she is a fantastic mother, and you can tell how proud of her little man she is.
